These conditions may, however, change from one moment to the next. To function properly, cells require appropriate conditions such as proper temperature, pH, and concentrations of diverse chemicals. For example, organ systems such as the digestive or circulatory systems perform specific functions like carrying oxygen throughout the body, removing wastes, delivering nutrients to every cell, and cooling the body. RegulationĮven the smallest organisms are complex and require multiple regulatory mechanisms to coordinate internal functions, such as the transport of nutrients, response to stimuli, and coping with environmental stresses. Figure 1.4 Although no two look alike, these kittens have inherited genes from both parents and share many of the same characteristics. These genes provide instructions that will direct cellular growth and development, ensuring that a species’ young will grow up to exhibit many of the same characteristics as its parents. Organisms grow and develop according to specific instructions coded for by their genes. As an environment changes, natural selection causes the characteristics of the individuals in a population to track those changes. All adaptations enhance the reproductive potential of the individual exhibiting them, including their ability to survive to reproduce. Examples of adaptations are diverse and unique, from heat-resistant Archaea that live in boiling hot springs to the tongue length of a nectar-feeding moth that matches the size of the flower from which it feeds. Biologists refer to this fit as adaptation and it is a consequence of evolution by natural selection, which operates in every lineage of reproducing organisms. AdaptationĪll living organisms exhibit a “fit” to their environment. These genes are the reason that the offspring will belong to the same species and will have characteristics similar to the parent, such as fur color and blood type. When reproduction occurs, DNA containing genes is passed along to an organism’s offspring. Many multicellular organisms (those made up of more than one cell) produce specialized reproductive cells that will form new individuals. Single-celled organisms reproduce by first duplicating their DNA, which is the genetic material, and then dividing it equally as the cell prepares to divide to form two new cells. Watch this video to see how the sensitive plant responds to a touch stimulus. After a few minutes, the plant returns to its normal state. Figure 1.3 The leaves of this sensitive plant (Mimosa pudica) will instantly droop and fold when touched. Movement toward a stimulus is considered a positive response, while movement away from a stimulus is considered a negative response. Even tiny bacteria can move toward or away from chemicals (a process called chemotaxis) or light (phototaxis). For example, plants can bend toward a source of light or respond to touch. Figure 1.2 A toad represents a highly organized structure consisting of cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems. How these specialized cells come together to form organs such as the heart, lung, or skin in organisms like the toad shown in Figure 1. Multicellular organisms, which may consist of millions of individual cells, have an advantage over single-celled organisms in that their cells can be specialized to perform specific functions, and even sacrificed in certain situations for the good of the organism as a whole. These in turn make up cell components or organelles. Inside each cell, atoms make up molecules. Even very simple, single-celled organisms are remarkably complex. Organisms are highly organized structures that consist of one or more cells. When viewed together, these eight characteristics serve to define life. Properties of LifeĪll groups of living organisms share multiple key characteristics or functions: order, sensitivity or response to stimuli, reproduction, adaptation, growth and development, regulation, homeostasis, and energy processing. It turns out that although viruses can attack living organisms, cause diseases, and even reproduce, they do not meet the criteria that biologists use to define life.įrom its earliest beginnings, biology has wrestled with four questions: What are the shared properties that make something “alive”? How do those various living things function? When faced with the remarkable diversity of life, how do we organize the different kinds of organisms so that we can better understand them? And, finally-what biologists ultimately seek to understand-how did this diversity arise and how is it continuing? As new organisms are discovered every day, biologists continue to seek answers to these and other questions. For example, a branch of biology called virology studies viruses, which exhibit some of the characteristics of living entities but lack others. What exactly is life? This may sound like a silly question with an obvious answer, but it is not easy to define life. Biology is the science that studies life. He concluded his lecture by emphasizing the necessity of a painter showing their mastery to their audience, too. He gave insight on what makes a magician great by sharing a quote from author Brad Meltzer, saying that the best magician reveals their trick so the audience can see the mastery unfold. His works are often vibrant and colorful with multiple layers and fine details full of imagery and symbolism, giving the illusion that it is more than a painting.īly said the power of art is important for both the audience and the artist themselves. Jason Bly, an assistant professor of art at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, utilizes a style called “trompe l’oeil,” meaning “trick of the eye,” a highly realistic artistic style that gives the perception of three-dimensional space on a two-dimensional surface. “Curriculum for a Better Tomorrow” is currently on display in the Martin Museum of Art, containing works from artist Jason Bly where he conducted a lecture at the to share his process, techniques, inspiration and meaning behind his paintings. Repentant Monk: Illusion and Disillusion in the Art of Chen Hongshou is organized by Senior Curator for Asian Art Julia M. The exhibition is accompanied by a unique audio guide, available in English and Mandarin, featuring musician Devendra Banhart and entrepreneur and collector Jerry Yang reading the artist’s inscriptions. Caught in a time of social and political chaos and fraught with guilt and regret over the deteriorating situation for artists loyal to the Ming, Chen was seriously disillusioned, a condition that can be sensed clearly in his later paintings. Chen used the name “Repentant Monk” (Hui Seng, 悔僧) in seals and signatures for only a short period, but his paintings continued to reflect this state of mind throughout his life. The exhibition title, Repentant Monk: Illusion and Disillusion in the Art of Chen Hongshou, refers to the sobriquet that Chen adopted in 1646, shortly after the fall of the Ming dynasty in 1644, and goes to the heart of the art on view. His landscape paintings reflect his vast knowledge of past traditions, while his bird-and-flower paintings display a remarkable freshness and modernity that has tremendous appeal for viewers today. His iconic manner of painting figures in the styles of ancient masters lends an aura of antiquity to his work, which is equally enlivened by distinct expressions of irony, humor, and pathos. Highlighting a selection of his best extant work, including figure, landscape, and bird-and-flower paintings drawn from BAMPFA’s holdings as well as collections worldwide, the exhibition demonstrates why Chen (1599–1652) has long been regarded as one of the most visually exciting artists of his time. This exhibition is the first to focus solely on Chen Hongshou, a major figure in Chinese painting of the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. HeroesĮach hero has a set of skills to utilize: a “healing” skill that restores health but can only be used once, a matchlock pistol with limited ammunition (Mugen has a more powerful “hand cannon” that can kill samurai), and two unique abilities: Hayato has a shuriken with which he can kill enemies (but not samurai) at a distance with little noise. Each mission also includes a set of “badges” for the player to earn. Some missions incorporate environmental elements such as snow and darkness, which alter normal enemy behavior. In addition to guards, heroes must also watch out for hostile civilians, who can’t attack but will alert any nearby guards of their presence, as well as birds and standing water, which make noise that guards can hear. If a hero is spotted or a dead body is discovered by the enemy, the alarm will be raised and additional patrols will be deployed to secure the area. The heroes can move the bodies of slain or unconscious guards to hide them in bushes, empty rooms, barrels and wells so that they won’t be found. Or simply knock them out for a small amount of time. Missions generally require the player to methodically eliminate enemies between them and the objective without raising the alarm players can lure guards into ambushes, kill them with traps or staged accidents. Enemy guards have a visible cone of vision which the heroes must evade to remain undetected. The player commands a small team and performs various acts of espionage, sabotage and assassination, such as infiltrating heavily guarded fortresses and eliminating enemies from within, killing/capturing special targets, stealing important documents, overhearing conversations to collect information, or rescuing other characters. Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun is a stealth-oriented real-time tactics game, inspired by the Commandos and Desperados game series. The group goes to apprehend Kage-sama, but quickly learn that their target is a decoy and the “encampment” is a trap: the true Kage-sama is none other than Lord Noboru. Defeated, the general commits seppuku with Mugen’s help after providing the group with a map that leads to a secret encampment in the marshlands where Kage-sama is hiding. The Shogun reprimands Mugen for acting rashly, but allows him nonetheless to deal with Okkoto. The group investigates the corrupt daimyo Lord Yabu, suspecting him of being Kage-sama due to his involvement in the production and smuggling of illegal weapons, but when Mugen decides to have him assassinated without the Shogun’s blessing, it triggers a rebellion of soldiers loyal to the Shogun’s former ally, General Okkoto. Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun – Aiko’s Choice Mugen subsequently recruits four other allies to assist him: Hayato, a grim, cynical ninja from the former Iga Province who fought alongside Mugen during the siege of Osaka Yuki, a clever, inquisitive young outcast and experienced thief Aiko, a female ninja from the Shinano Province and Mugen’s paramour and Takuma, a one-legged sharpshooter, weapon smith, and alchemist. The Shogun turns to Oshiro Mugen, a samurai in his service, and assigns him to uncover Kage-sama’s true identity and bring him to justice. However, a mysterious warlord known only as “Kage-sama” has emerged, jeopardizing the country’s stability. An unnamed shogun has unified Japan after years of war. The game is set at the beginning of Japan’s Edo period. The player has to carefully evaluate his options in order to master the challenging missions: how will the characters behave as a team? Which one is best equipped for each task? How can they best master the given missions? Come up with your own ingenious tactics to vanquish enemies and complete missions. The mysterious marksman Takuma however, relies on his sniper rifle and takes care of the enemies from a distance. And the street child Yuki places traps and decoys enemies towards their deadly fate. Aiko is a master of camouflage when she distracts enemies disguised as a Geisha. Samurai Mugen prefers a more powerful approach and can defeat more fiends at one time, but thus also forfeiting flexibility. It seemed like the sound had to expand as it got from heist-y to people dying. But then as it got heavier after the trial, then we got a 52-piece orchestra. And then I had a small string section, and small brass for the first three episodes. In the beginning, there’s a lot of ’70s, with clarinet and flute and Rhodes piano, Hammond organ, drum set. They go through the episode and expand in sound as they go.īTL: What instruments did you know you wanted to incorporate into your music?Ĭardoni: It’s all pretty much acoustic instrument based. There’s Dorothy’s theme, which becomes the Hunt family theme. And then there’s the family theme since the show is a lot about those relationships. There’s an overall theme for Hunt and Liddy, then there’s another theme for Liddy, the first time we see him. I’m super old-fashioned in themes and melodies and stuff. But it’s gratifying to have made it through. I thought I was going to have a nervous breakdown trying to keep track of it all. When something would change earlier, that would affect what would happen later. We went through all the episodes, but the problem was that, once I got a first pass of all the episodes, then it was like, “Change that cue in that episode.” It was this constantly moving puzzle of pieces that would change. Justin Theroux, Judy Greer, Lena Headey, and Woody Harrelson in White House Plumbers/HBOīTL: Did you work on it in that order, light to heavy?Ĭardoni: Yeah. Just a lot of trial and error until we came up with stuff that worked, and had the raw material that I could expand on as the series progressed - from the light stuff to the super dark, heavy stuff. It was more that David wanted it to be a modernized version of a ’70s political thriller. There was never really any direction in that way. I was thinking David Shire and some of the great classic ’70s thrillers like All the President’s Men. When I first talked to David Mandel, I wrote some demos to try to get this job. That was a challenge and a fun puzzle.īTL: Was there a template or inspiration that you took for those episodes and then the later ones?Ĭardoni: No, it was really trial and error. There wasn’t a sound and it stayed the sound through all the episodes. I had never really dealt with that before where you had to find this tone that could morph and expand through the whole story. And then it just goes downhill fast, so the last two episodes are super dark and emotional. Up until Episode 3, it’s a little lighter, a little more heist-y. I never really had a show like this, where it changes tone over the arc of the show. It was a little hairy.īTL: Each episode takes on a different focus and your music follows that.Ĭardoni: Honestly, I’m trying to think. It was like two-and-a-half movies and I had six weeks. It was kind of overwhelming because it was like a five-hour movie. I was literally working on every episode at the same time. When I came on board, everything was already put together. They were all shot and being edited at the same time. What was the approach you took to tackle those different episodes?Ĭardoni: I just approached it like a five-hour movie. This show looks at some different characters from a different angle than the other ones have, but we all know the big picture, sure.īTL: A five-episode limited series presents a cool opportunity because it’s a good length. Jeff Cardoni: I thought I was pretty aware, but a lot of things I apparently didn’t know. Jeff Cardoni photo courtesy of HBOīelow the Line: How much were you aware of the real-life events that inspired this show? The composer’s range and flexibility have helped keep him in business for the past 20 years, ever since he got his big break on CBS’ sunny CSI spinoff, and in the below interview, he also revisited some his past work that he felt was underappreciated, such as his cues for Rob Lowe‘s short-lived series The Grinder. That’s been a recurring theme over the course of Cardoni’s impressive career, as he has also added some dramatic flair to comedic series like Ghosts and The Kominsky Method. He also emphasized that he was writing music for a drama, even if what was happening on-screen may have been funny. Her attempts to balance guilt and morality with reality are the source of her agonizing conflict, which is dynamic throughout even this excerpt. Her guilt, after driving her insane, loosened its hold on her as she ceases to question and drifts away from morality. She is actually gradually resolving this internal conflict as she gives in and accepts the deeds she laments, essentially plunging her past the point of return for her morality. These questioning lines reveal her internal conflict, but as the piece progresses, they begin to Segway to statements regarding the reality of her situation (29-30). Her initial line is only spoken in panicked exclamations and, more dominantly, aggressive questioning of herself (17-19). Her raging internal guilt is expressed externally in her subconscious statements made while sleepwalking. Lady Macbeth’s lines, the focus of the excerpt, begin their tonal contributions right way in the piece. This works to create an eerie atmosphere reinforced by the vague feeling of a feudal era asylum. The dismay the learned expert shows in numerous lines (25, 27-28) at Lady Macbeth’s distressing behavior plunges the reader into a feeling of despair and concern as the doctor states the absence of a solution he knows of (27). Readers often associate the presence of a doctor with an ominous undercurrent, and the doctor in this scene has that exact effect. The scene itself stirs the reader’s emotions simply through the characters present. The tone of Shakespeare’s writing is one of his greatest tools, as his work exists to be performed on stage. He utilizes tone, diction, and contrast to create profound dramatic irony in the context of an individual’s guilt. In the excerpt above taken from Act V of Macbeth, Shakespeare uses various literary techniques in the context of Lady Macbeth’s torturous madness to convey his message. Shakespeare’s Macbeth is a monolithic exposition on the nature of guilt in human existence, and its inherent irony. My mind she has mated, and amaz’d my sight. Remove from her the means of all annoyance,Īnd still keep eyes upon her. More needs she the divine than the physician. This disease is beyond my practice: yet I have known those which have walked in their sleep who have died holily in their beds. I would not have such a heart in my bosom for the dignity of the whole body.ĭoct. What a sigh is there! The heart is sorely charged. Here’s the smell of the blood still: all the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand. She has spoke what she should not, I am sure of that: Heaven knows what she has known.
